Comfort

Some people see comfort as a weakness and those who indulge in it as weak. They see comfort as non-active and ineffectual. As well, some others see comfort as a selfish indulgence and, therefore, evil. However, comfort is a feeling that everything is OK, that you’re at ease in the world and there are no urgent problems. Comfort is, in truth, a success state. It often means you’ve brought your life into harmony and have resolved issues, that your life is going along well. Even though comfort isn’t the end goal of life, per se, it still is a good and desirable thing.

Comfort is a beneficial state that we must work for. Contrary to opinions of comfort being a natural state, we all come into this world screaming in discomfort. A lack of comfort, from a lack of food, shelter, etc., is a natural state of man that he must work to alleviate. Comfort is a product of productive action. It is much like happiness, except it has lower standards to arise. Comfort is a safety of your existence that arises from effective action. It’s a success state because, with life as the standard of success, you’ve established a state of harmony with existence.

Since life is the standard of success, it’s best to understand comfort in the context of life. It isn’t good to pursue comfort as an end in itself, since it’s not an end in itself. Focusing too much on comfort may cause you to become short-sighted and merely want comfort of the moment. Since comfort is just a feeling or mood, it’s temporary and contingent on the precursors of said feeling or mood. We’re only comfortable because we’ve satisfied what life requires for comfort. By making comfort your focal point, you will ultimately miss it because you have divorced it from the standard, life, of its precursors. Comfort isn’t the ultimate end. Rather, it’s a sign you’re satisfying the ultimate end, i.e. your life. There are times when your life will require you to do things that may be uncomfortable, such as working hard or getting a flu shot. This doesn’t mean comfort isn’t important; it merely means comfort is more of a temporary reward in a series of states of discomfort and comfort.

Although comfort can be erroneous, like all feelings, comfort is generally a desirable state. It means you have brought your life into harmony and ease. However, comfort is best understood in the greater context of your life. Comfort is a pleasant moment of success in the greater adventure of your life.
